Posted: Monday, Oct 15th, 2007

With just over a minute left before the half, the Paso Robles Bearcats were up 17-7 over the Lompoc Braves Friday night. The Bearcats added two more touchdowns coming back from the half and went onto win the game, 30-7.

A Braves fumble on their first possession in the third quarter set up the Bearcats their third touchdown of the game.

On a second and nine from the 30-yard line, Bearcats quarterback Brandon Ladley handed off to Nathan Nelson who took it in for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Bearcats took a 24-7 lead over the Braves.

Six minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bearcats scored again as Nelson carried the ball in from five yards out. The extra point failed, but the Bearcats jumped ahead of the Braves, 30-7, and held onto that score to end the game with their first league victory.

In the first quarter it was the Bearcats’ other senior rusher, Josh Weferling, who opened the scoring. Wefering carried the ball in from 11 yards out to make it 7-0 in favor of Paso Robles after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Braves scored their lone touchdown of the game as Bobby Collins carried the ball in from three yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Paso Robles responded with 10 points to end the half as Nelson carried the ball in from a yard out for his first score of the game and Ryan Bedell hit a 25-yard field goal to make it 17-7.

Most of the yardage for the Bearcats came on the ground, as Paso Robles piled up 351 yards rushing. Nelson rushed 30 times for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Weferling carried the ball five times for 47 yards and a touchdown, while Andy Bridge had 17 yards on four carries.

Ladley finished 4-for-7 for 36 yards and an interception. Nelson, Weferling, Mike Stark and Mitchell Van Dyk each had a reception. Defensively, Paso Robles held Lompoc to just 125 yards, just 72 rushing and 53 passing.

The Bearcats are now 5-1 overall, 1-0 in the PAC 7. They play at home this Friday against the Righetti Warriors starting at 7:30 p.m. The game is homecoming for the Bearcats.
