Bearcats improve to 3-1 win win over Soquel

The Paso Robles High School varsity football team traveled to Soquel to play the Knights on Friday, winning 41-21.

The Bearcats scored 10 points in the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run from quarterback Thomas Bernal and a 26-yard field goal from Jacob Bedell.

In the second quarter, Cheston Holguin scored on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Bernal. Bedell later scored a 35-yard field goal to put the Bearcats up 20-7 over the Knights.

In the third quarter, the Bearcats lit up the field with three touchdowns. The first was a seven-yard run from Andy Bridge. For the second, Bernal connected with Weston O’Conner for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The third touchdown was a six-yard pass from quarterback Austin Flynn to Brandon Todd. All three of the extra point kicks by Bedell were good, as the Bearcats took a 41-7 lead.

Soquel scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cut the Bearcats lead 41-21, but it wasn’t enough.

As a team, the Bearcats rushed 33 times for 266 yards, and passed for another 303, amassing 569 total years.

The Bearcats have a bye this week. They play one final non-league game against perennial powerhouse El Diamante on Thursday, Oct. 9 before beginning PAC 7 competition.



Cross Country

Both Templeton and Paso Robles high schools competed in the Arroyo Grande Big Ditch Cross Country Meet on Saturday.

For boys small school varsity, Paso Robles finished second with 46 points and Templeton finished sixth with 147 points.

Cabrillo came in first with 45 points, Atascadero came in third with 60 points, Nipomo finished fourth with 133 points, Midland finished fifth with 136 points, Santa Ynez finished seventh with 191 points and Estancia finished in eighth with 205 points.

Individually, Paso Robles’ Pepe Gonzalez finished first with a time of 16:50, Andy Lopez finished third with a time of 16:54 and Jacob Moore finished in fourth place with a time of 16:55.

Templeton’s Paul Denlinger finished second with a time of 16:52.

For girls small school varsity, Templeton finished in second place with a team score of 34.

Atascadero finished first with a score of 30, Santa Ynez finished third with a score of 123, Estancia finished fourth with a score of 136, Cabrillo finished fifth with a score of 140, Laguna Blanca finished in sixth place with a score of 151 and Nipomo finished in seventh place with a score of 176.

Individually, Templeton’s Savannah Camacho finished in first place with a time of 20:12. Kasey Urman finished in sixth place with a time of 20:47, Grace Elgin finished in eighth place with a time of 20:50, twin sister Hilary finished in ninth place with a time of 20:53, Camille Bernal finished in tenth place with a time of 20:54 and Carrissa Cochrane finished in eleventh place with a time of 21:42.

For Paso Robles, Loryn Bedell finished in third place with a time of 20:25 and Kelsey Kosin finished in thirteenth with a time of 21:55, followed by Nikita Kinsell who finished in sixteenth place with a time of 22:13.

The next cross country meet will be the Atascadero Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Chalk Mountain.



Girls Volleyball

The Paso Robles girls volleyball team played Nipomo on Thursday and won, 3-1.

The Bearcats lost the first game, 25-14, then won the next three games, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16. Nicole Andersen, Krista Broderick and Lauren Redburg had two service aces apiece. Tess Rountree led with 11 kills and teammate Tyler Megna added eight. Redburg led with six digs and Dana Koman had five.

The Bearcats are now 4-0 overall, 2-0 PAC 7. They play their next league match up against Arroyo Grande at home on tonight.



Coaches Wanted

Templeton High School is looking to fill the following coaching positions.

The Eagles are seeking coaches for junior varsity girls soccer, junior varsity boys baseball and junior varsity softball. Two varsity coach’s positions are also available in softball and boys golf.
