Eagles remain unbeaten, win LPL opener
Posted: Monday, Oct 1st, 2007

It was a shut out league victory for the Templeton Eagles, as they defeated the Santa Ynez Pirates on the road, 36-0 in their Los Padres League opener.

“Our defense played awesome tonight,” said coach Don Crow. “[We] created four turnovers; we scored on defense; we had a shut out. Coach Harker, our defensive coordinator, he had it ready to go and those kids played their butts off.”

The Eagles recovered the first fumble off the Pirates first punt return. The Eagles wouldn’t squander that opportunity, scoring their first touchdown on the recovery by Tanner Robinson.

“It felt good; it was exciting,” said Robinson of the touchdown. “It’s my second touchdown this year on defense.”

Eagles quarterback Casey Bogart connected with Justin Butz in the end zone for a two-point conversion and put the Eagles up 8-0 with seven minutes left to play in the first quarter. Bogart was 6-for-8 for 63 yards on passing.

“It felt good to come out here after what happened last year against Santa Ynez, and play the way that we did–– it felt really good,” Bogart said.

Last year, the Pirates defeated the Eagles 30-27 in a come from behind win in Templeton. This year, the Eagles returned the favor.

The Eagles quickly added another touchdown as they set the ball up on a fourth and goal. Brenton Cordle slammed his way across the goal line for the Eagles’ second touchdown. With the extra point, the Eagles moved ahead 15-0 to end the first quarter.

Cordle rushed six times for 35 yards and one touchdown.

At the start of the second, another fumble on the punt return nearly cost the Pirates the ball, but they managed to recover. But on the second play of the possession, Pirates quarterback Blake Dubois fumbled the ball and this time his team wasn’t able to make the save as the Eagles jumped on the ball.

A 35-yard run from Ben Terry gave the Eagles their third touchdown. The extra point was good, as the Eagles jumped ahead, 22-0 to start the second quarter.

Terry carried the ball 10 times for 97 yards and one touchdown.

The Eagles’ fourth touchdown came from Bogart, who ran the ball in and put his team up 29-0 to end the first half. Bogart carried the ball five times for 15 yards. His twin brother, Tyler, caught two passes for 19 yards.

In the third quarter, the Eagles marched down the field for a final touchdown. On first and goal from the two yard line, Garrett Baldwin carried the ball in. With the extra point, the Eagles won their first league game of the season 36-0.

“The linemen were blocking really well,” Baldwin said. “I just went right behind them and went right on in for the touchdown.”

Baldwin carried the ball six times for 37 yards and one touchdown in the game. In all, the Eagles had five different players score touchdowns in the league-opening win. With the win, the Eagles advanced to 4-0 overall, 1-0 in the LPL.

The Eagles amassed a total of 312 yard on rushing, as compared to the Pirates 55 yards. Santa Ynez was limited to five first downs and just 85 total yards, turning the ball over three times.

Overall, Crow was pleased with the effort the team put out in the game.

“In the first half we really played well, and in the second half we got enough done to get out of here with a good win,” Crow said.

The Eagles play at home against Morro Bay on Friday, Oct. 5. The varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m.
