ATASCADERO — Imagine the streets of Atascadero flooded with the sounds of the clarinet, bass and accordion. Then add a melodious voice singing above it all in a language rarely spoken outside a synagogue, this is the sound of New York’s Yiddish Art Trio. This contemporary Klezmer band, known internationally for their virtuosic musicianship, will give the true feeling of chutzpah to listeners when they grace the bema at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Ohr Tzafon Rabbi Janice Mehring and Board President Ron Becker welcome all out to the congregation for a night of Jewish folk music. Becker said this could be a night of great exploration for those that have not heard this type of music and a chance for those familiar with Klezmer to see this outstanding band play.

“Most people don’t know what Klezmer is,” Becker said. “They are definitely not a second-rate band. They are very professional, so it will be a very good experience. What people will learn about is to enjoy Klezmer, Jewish music that is not commonly known of or heard in the general mainstream. And for those that are familiar with the music, it is an opportunity to enjoy a great band. This is something that we would like to provide the community for their enjoyment. The last time they were here, we even danced the Horah. It was a great time.”

The Trio is made up of three talented musicians — Michael Winograd, who plays the clarinet, Patrick Farrell on the accordion and Benjy Fox-Rosen, who sings and plays the bass. The group formerly known as the Michael Winograd Klezmer Trio was formed in 2009 and has toured both nationally and internationally. They have performed with some major players in the industry including, Itzhak Perlman the noted virtuosic violinist, Yo-Yo Ma, Ben Holmes, Frank London, the Klezmer Conservatory Band and many more. They are once again bringing the sound of the Old Country to the West Coast and Atascadero is again one of their stops.

“The group came to play a couple of years ago,” said Becker. “We put them up for the night with one of our congregants, who is a pipe organ player and they really enjoyed each other. They stayed there that night and my wife and I had dinner with them. They are just three of the most friendly people you could ever imagine. They played music and we talked and laughed. They are very good. They called this year and asked to play again and we said sure. They are very talented and just grateful to have a place to play and stay while they are on tour.”

The Yiddish Art Trio will be playing at Ohr Tzafon, 2605 Traffic Way, Atascadero. They are asking for a cover charge of $15. To buy tickets in advance, call Becker at Ohr Tzafon at 466-0329 — leave a message with a name, phone number and the number of tickets.
