Patrons sample food from local restaurants during last year’s Taste of Downtown event. This year’s event is set for this Saturday, Sept. 17.
Walk from morning to dusk enjoying vibrant chalk art and gourmet bites beginning at 8 a.m. at the Arte De Tiza, hosted by the Paso Robles Art Association in the Paso’s Downtown City Park. Then, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., drink and taste the wealth of flavor that Paso Robles offers at the Taste of Downtown hosted by the Paso Robles Downtown Main Street Association. Both events will take place Saturday, Sept. 17 in downtown Paso Robles.
ARTE DE TIZA
Chalk artists will make the Paso Robles Downtown City Park their canvas during the free annual Arte De Tiza event. Patrons will be able to observe art in progress, chat with the artists or bring chalk art supplies and make their own creation. Artists do not need to register for the event, but should arrive at 8 a.m. to join the fun.
Paso Robles Art Association member and publicity chairperson Jeannine Bringman said that she joined the nonprofit group of artists two years ago and sees this event as a great opportunity to share what PRAA does.
“The art association has been around since about the 1940s and hosts a lot of activities in the community,” Bringman said. “Each member is able to join a guild and each hosts meetings in the different disciplines and Arte De Tiza is one of many events that showcases local talent and helps our association to share the work we do.
"The Arte De Tiza is open to everyone and free to attend and is an awareness builder. It is a first-come,
first-serve event where anyone can come and draw. Come down at 8 a.m. to the Paso Robles City Park and pick up some calk. We supply the needed art supplies and some do bring the higher grade of chalk or pastels. Space is limited to the front of Pine Street, a full city block between 12th and 13th streets. People are free to draw really just about anything and there is no theme. Everything is provided by sponsors, donors and volunteers. Over 100 squares are marked off and artists, individually or in groups, design the most amazing chalk art. It is the generosity of all those involved in Arte De Tiza that has made this such a successful event each year and has helped so many of our young people achieve in the arts.”
Awards are given for each division including; Pre-School, Elementary School, Middle School, High School and Adult and winners will be announced at the bandstand during the event. Participants may work individually or in groups. Each division will be awarded a first, second and third place prize.
The funds raised through sponsorships and donations provide scholarships for North County art students at Cuesta College. Donations may be sent to the Paso Robles Art Association at P.O. Box 2219, Paso Robles, CA, 93447. The PRAA is located inside the Studios on the Park in Studio #7 at 1130 Pine St. in Paso Robles and will be open during Arte De Tiza. The cost to attend the event is $25 per person and affords patrons a wine glass for tasting and a pass to taste at all participating locations. There will also be a DJ playing some tunes to walk to.
Event founder and founder of the Main Street Association Norma Moye said when the event started 19 years ago it was relatively small, but has grown beyond expectations and now features 33 local restaurants and wineries.
“They get a pass for the great price of $25 and when they stop by the information booth in the park they will get a pass to taste from 33 wineries and restaurants,” Moye said. “We are only selling 400 tickets and they are being reserved fast. Anyone can call the office, pay over the phone and they will be put on will-call for the event. It is really a great time and everyone says how much they enjoy the full day with our partners Arte De Tiza in the morning and then spend the afternoon and evening tasting great food and wines.”
