A season for giving: Coats for Kids warms children, hearts

ATASCADERO — There are many ways to measure success, but one way to know for sure is when the scale by which you measure success is too small to measure how successful you are. Such is the case for Coats for Kids, a local, nonprofit organization with a single, simple, achievable goal: keep kids warm in winter.

Butz said that since its inception 25 years ago, Coats for Kids has given away an inestimable number of coats, jackets, sweaters and sweatshirts. She wouldn’t even try to guess how many it’s been.

Coats for Kids started as a sort of guerilla charity in Paso Robles. The founders were Barbie Butz and Dorris Arnold. Back then, the two worked with Los Ninos Auxillary for Children’s Home Society of California. It was an organization that offered adoption services, Butz said. And it was through that work that Butz and Arnold noticed a need.
