A few years back, Shandon resident Dugan Kelly had just returned from a long trip with his horse, Circleback. The top team roper turned the prized horse loose in the high grass and went to working out in the pasture.

Then, tragedy struck.

While trotting through the pasture, Circleback, then five years old, impaled himself on a sucker rod sticking out from the fencing.

“He hit the rod in the armpit, and it went through him a foot-and-a-half,” Kelly said. “I hauled him down to the vet. They had to stitch him up, but they couldn’t stitch it completely. He had to heal from the inside out.”
