PASO ROBLES — For the 18th consecutive year, Paso Robles High alumnus Bob Cantu will return to San Luis Obispo County to give back to the community where he grew up.
Cantu, who was a three-year varsity player with the Bearcats before graduating in 1992, has hosted the Cantu Camps since he was 22 years old.
The 2014 iteration of Bob Cantu’s Basketball Camp is coming to Paso Robles next week, starting on Monday, June 23 and continuing daily through Thursday.
The camp at Centennial Park Gym has two sessions, a morning camp from 9 a.m. to noon for kids ages 4-8, and an afternoon camp from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for the 9-12 age group.
As of now, there are still spots available for students to sign up, either online or by drop-in on the day of camp.
There will also be sessions in SLO at Mission Prep, running from June 30-July 3 and July 14-17.
According to Cantu, over 7,000 students have come through the camp in the span of time since the first one in 1997.
“I originally named it ‘Fundamental Basketball Camp’ because I really wanted to teach the basics of basketball,” said Cantu in a recent phone interview. “It’s never too early for kids to learn how to pass, dribble, shoot, pivot and [take] a defensive stance. And so, I kind of feel like I’ve found a creative way of teaching those drills, but also allowing them to have fun with games, contests and a rewards banquet on the last day.”For the complete article see the 06-20-2014 issue.
