PASO ROBLES — Led by a pair of high school coaches and a crew of high school players turned instructors, the Paso Robles Volleyball Skills Camp went off this week without a hitch.

After a few years of doing one-day camps, Paso head coach D.J. Bigelow decided it was time to up the ante, switching to a four-day format for the first time.

“This is our first annual weeklong [camp],” Bigelow said. “We’ve done a one-day camp before, but we’ve never done a weeklong and this is our first one.”

Judging by the volume of interest and the number of girls who enrolled, it’s safe to say the inaugural volleyball summer session was a success.

“I could not be more excited about it,” Bigelow said. “We had tremendous interest. We actually had a waiting list and had to turn away quite a few kids just because our gym with two nets is just not big enough. I felt really bad about that, but we wanted it to be real quality. As of our first one, we want to make sure we’re doing it right [and] not have too many people on the court.”

The courts at Gil Asa Gymnasium were packed to the gills, with a total enrollment of 35 students, in addition to the collection of current high schoolers and Paso alums serving as coaches.
