TEMPLETON — Look out world. Santa Ynez is back and ready for battle. Tuesday was brawl on the volleyball court when the Templeton High School Eagles hosted the Pirates for the Los Padres League home opener.
The Pirates came out strong, and never gave up control as they delivered the first LPL loss to the Eagles since Nov. 5, 2013 with a 25-22, 28-26, 25-19 sweep.
Santa Ynez jumped out early with a 6-0 run before a set from senior Hannah McRoy to sophomore Cheyenne Rice gave the Eagles a side out and serve.
McRoy took the service line and the Eagles charged back into the set with their own 8-0 run that included two aces by McRoy.
The match was a battle from there, with the Eagles holding strong through 11-9, but the Pirates jumped over for an 18-15 lead and did not let up.
At 22-16, the window was closing. McRoy found herself at the service line again with her Eagles trailing by six points. Again, she closed the gap.
McRoy served the Eagles to within 22-19 before the game began going the other way. Templeton gave their final push when trailing, 24-19, and came within 24-22, but the Pirates prevailed.
Templeton traveled to Lompoc on Thursday. Results were unavailable at press time.
