ATASCADERO — The junior varsity battle between the Atascadero and Paso Robles high school boys basketball teams was an intense preview of things to come for the ongoing rivalry.

The contest was a one-possession game into the final seconds, but AHS sophomore Justin Fetzer stole the ball in the final play of the game as Atascadero sealed a 43-40 win.

Heading through the third quarter, Paso Robles held a 23-21 lead until Fetzer knocked down a 3-pointer to gave Atascadero a momentary lead.

Paso Robles hit a couple consecutive shots, and jumped back on top, 27-24, with 1:30 left in the quarter.

The Bearcats closed out the third quarter with a 27-26 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the race was on, and the Bearcats stayed a step ahead through the first 1:00 to hold a 33-29 lead.

In the next :45, Atascadero went on a 5-0 run to grab the lead for the first time in the final quarter, 34-33.

On and on the chase went round and round like a dog and cat chasing tails. Paso Robles put away a fast-break layup to regain the lead, 35-34, with 4:40 left to play.

With 3:30 left, AHS sophomore A.J. Carter knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Hounds the lead, 37-35, and Fetzer drove the lane for floater to add to the lead with 3:00 left.

For the first time in the second half, one team scored three consecutive times. Carter drove the lane, drawing the defense, and dished to AHS sophomore Cade Sokolovski in the post for an open layup. Atascadero held its biggest lead of the half, 41-35, with 2:37 to play.

Paso Robles No. 22 and No. 30 both scored at the other end in consecutive possessions, and the Bearcats kept the heat on, 41-39.

Atascadero padded the lead, 43-39, with 1:18 left. Paso Robles hit one free throw to make it a one-possession game, and PRHS’ Jordan Zamora handled the ball, looking for a shot in the final :06 — but Fetzer stole the ball to end the Bearcats’ hopes to keep the game alive.
