Greyhounds edge Bearcats 50-44 in varsity win

Paso Robles senior Cheyne Hayes had a team high 18 points during his teams 50-44 loss to Atascadero on Friday, Feb. 5.
Things started off slow for the Atascadero High School varsity boys basketball team, but they got better, while for Paso Robles, which started off quickly, things got inconsistent, and it led to a 50-44 win for the Greyhounds on Friday.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 14-4 lead with about two minutes left in the first quarter, but the scoring suddenly stopped right at the same time as forward Cheyne Hayes suffered a bleeding cut under his eye which forced him out of the game for about a quarter's worth of minutes.

Paso Robles didn't score again until Alex Chaidez hit a pair of free throws with 2:57 left before halftime.

"I think that hurt," Paso Robles coach Scott Larson said of Hayes' injury. "He's a force for us; he played hard and did a nice job. But that kept him out of the game for about a quarter and we got kind of deflated."

While the Bearcats had stopped scoring, Atascadero had suddenly started to score and went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter, turning a 14-4 deficit into a 17-14 lead.

"When we cut, push the ball and spread the defense, we're a pretty effective offensive team," said Atascadero coach Jerry Tamelier. "But we have a tendency to bunch up and stand and we're just too easy to defend. I thought that early, we were flat and stagnant but as the game went on, we got more player movement and consequently, got some better shots."

The Hounds led 30-24 after point guard Troy Norris made a free throw, but the Hounds then were in a similar situation to that of the Bearcats in the second quarter - having to sit Norris for a while, although this was because he picked up his fourth foul instead of an injury...
