El Paso de Robles Grange 555 will be hosting a Tri-Tip Barbecue on Saturday, April 17 to help raise funds for the upkeep and preservation of the Grange Hall. The Hall is located at 627 Creston Road and not only houses the Grange but also local 4-H groups.

“We have three 4-H programs that meet here – El Paso de Robles, Chaparral and Ranchita Canyon, and we don’t charge them,” explained Lester Rougeot.

The Grange organization was formed after the Civil War in 1867 as a means of bringing rural people together. Halls were built and served as community centers, places to gather for meetings, entertainment and even emergency shelter.

The first Grange in California was established in 1873. Considered a community–based, family farm organization, there are approximately 260 Grange programs in California today.

The El Paso de Robles Grange Hall is in need of repairs and the monies from the barbecue will go to that cause.

“Right now we are trying to raise money to repair the roof and finish the bathrooms,” said Rougeot. “We have a commitment that we only spend what we have. Some other Granges get loans or go in debt, but if we have the money, we use it. If not, we raise it.”

Saturday’s barbecue will feature tri-tip, salad, beans and garlic bread prepared by Rougeot and his crew. In addition, there will be crafts for sale to help raise funds for building improvements. Local 4-H members will be assisting at the event, and it is a great opportunity to support the Grange.

Tickets can be purchased ahead of time from 4-H members or at the event...
