Billy R. Roden

Billy R. Roden, 81, of Cholame, Calif. passed away on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at his home. He was born on June 20, 1931 in Texarkana, AR the oldest of two sons to his parents Sherman and Bessie Roden. Brother Bob joined the family four years later in 1935.

He worked from the age of 12 doing odd jobs, going door to door selling car polish with his cousins, picking cotton in Turkey, TX and painting houses in Yuba City, Calif., where his family moved in 1946. He attended Yuba City High School, but finding he was one credit short for graduation with his classmates, he returned to Texarkana to finish his high school education in the summer of 1949.

After graduation, he joined the Navy and became a C. B. In the summer of 1951 he met and fell head over heals with a “pretty little blonde headed girl,” Doreen, and they married three months later. Their son Bill was born in 1953, and their daughter Sharon was born in 1955. He was a farmer for most of his life and in 1983 planted pistachios on the family farm. He was a consummate fisherman and enjoyed sharing this passion with friends and family.

Bill will be remembered lovingly by his bride of 61 years, Doreen Still Roden; his son Bill and wife Karen Moore Roden; his daughter Sharon and partner Dana Bartlett; grandson Mathew and his wife, Jennifer VanHorn Roden; granddaughter Christina and husband, Jason Borchard; and great-grandsons Charlie and Calvin Roden. Bill is also survived by his brother Bob and his wife, Carolyn, their eldest daughter Chrissie Roden Preston, Jim Preston and their sons Trace and Aidan, their younger daughter Tracey, husband Kamran Ardalan and their son Cyrus Ardalan.

Relatives and friends are invited to a graveside service for Bill at noon on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Shandon Cemetery in Shandon. A reception will follow at the home of Bill and Doreen Roden.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army.

Services are under the direction of Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles.
