Bearcats advance in CIF on penalty kicks

Posted: Thursday, Feb 20th, 2014

LA PUENTE — The Paso Robles boys varsity soccer team survived a CIF road trip on Tuesday night, taking down host Nogales High in a Division 5 Wild Card match, 5-4 in penalty kicks.

The Bearcats and Nobles fought tooth-and-nail for 80 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, but in the end, it was Paso who performed well enough in PKs to get the win.

Nogales entered the match as the No. 4 seed from the Valle Vista League, while Paso was a PAC-7 at-large selection.

“It meant a lot to us [to win],” said Paso coach Omar McPherson. “We’re excited that we get a chance to go to the next round, and we look forward to our contest against Granite Hills High School.”

The Bearcats hit the road to take on Granite Hills on Thursday, but results were not available at press time. The Cougars were the No. 1 seed out of the Desert Sky League.
