CERRITOS — A phenomenal season came to an end for the Templeton High School girls varsity basketball team.

The CIF-SS Division 4AA 5-seed Whitney Wildcats, led by high-scoring seniors Rachel Nagel and Reyna Ta’amu, defeated the Eagles, 54-33, in Cerritos on Saturday.

The Wildcats came into the game with a similar record as the Eagles — winning the Academy League championship with a 10-0 record and going 26-3 overall.

Whitney held a height advantage over the Eagles and, when THS senior star player Mari Stewart was injured in the first half, the Wildcats took control.

“One of the girls came off the bench and slashed the side of [Stewart’s] eye,” said Templeton head coach Shawn Koehler. “We could not stop the bleeding. When she got to the sidelines, there was a bunch of blood coming out.”

Stewart was out for several minutes of the first half and the Wildcats’ post player was able to make a huge impact before intermission.
