ANAHEIM — The Servite Friars made it to the CIF-SS Div. 3AA quarterfinals to face the Atascadero High boys varsity basketball team by delivering the fatal blow to two different league champions. On Tuesday night, they did it again with a 49-47 win over the Hounds.
As with any road challenge, the visiting team has three factors to overcome — the officials, the crowd and the players on the court. Each plays a significant role in the dance on the hardwood.
The Servite ballroom is particularly intense with a wall of energy dressed up as a student section playing to the wand of the orchestrating leaders, who wrote messages on a portable whiteboard and held it up for the chorus to sing along.
The Friars’ crowd did its homework and chanted everything from humorous barbs about the AHS players’ personal lives to taunting chants about the visiting crowd.
The only thing that could truly prepare a team for playing in that environment is playing in that environment, and the edge the Friars gained in the first quarter was enough to hold off the Hounds through the final seconds. For the complete article see the 02-28-2014 issue.
