William Junior Harris was born Nov. 14, 1923 and passed away on Jan. 26, 2014. Born in Wheaton, Ill., he was the fourth of nine children born to John and Molly Harris. He and his family crossed the United States during the Great Depression and landed in California where his father would teach William how to paint houses for a living. A World War II veteran serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, he earned three Bronze Service Stars.
Returning from the War, William married his sweetheart Virginia Ruth and they were blessed with three children. William taught himself how to do carpentry and eventually had a business with two of his brothers building tract homes. Later in life, he became a master handyman that could fix or build almost anything having to do with a house.
William and Virginia left San Diego in 1989 and settled in Paso Robles, a town that they loved. William used his handyman skills and Virginia volunteered for the Paso Robles Senior Center and Main Street keeping them busy and involved in Paso. William and Virginia were married for nearly 60 years; Virginia passing away in December 2007.
William passed away gently at 90 years of age after having loving visits and conversations with his children and close friends. He leaves behind son Gary Harris (Susan and their four children) of Andover, Minn.; and daughters Kathy Rierson (Gary) of Laguna Beach, and Donna Kotselas (John and their three children) of San Diego. He also leaves behind two brothers and one sister, as well as his dear friend Irene Bishop of Atascadero, who he fondly called his adopted daughter.
William’s cremated remains have been buried next to his “Virginia” in the Rose Garden at the Paso Robles Cemetery. The private service held March 27, 2014, was attended by immediate family and close friends. William was honored with a Military Honor Guard for his service to our country.
