August Skye Gaw of Santa Margarita was born Aug. 3, 1980 at home on Los Osos Road in Atascadero.
He was the third of five children born to Peter and Cynthia Gaw. He was educated at home for elementary school and then attended North County Christian High School, Atasacdero High School and Cuesta College.
He graduated from Allan Hancock College Fire Academy in 2002.
August was raised in Covenant Presbyterian Church of Atascadero and Paso Robles. He served as a reserve firefighter for the City of Atascadero before joining the US Army in 2006. He graduated from Fort Benning basic training (first in his platoon), Airborne, and then Special Forces Selection at Fort Bragg. He married Sara Marie Inlow in 2007. He served in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart and other awards. Since leaving the Army, he has been employed at Weatherby Arms as a weapons tester.
August is survived by his wife, Sara, 9-month-old daughter, Hunter Skye Gaw, his parents, Peter and Cynthia Gaw of Boone, N.C., brother, Forrest Gaw of San Luis Obispo, sisters Brooke Peterson (Eric and niece Olivia) of San Diego and Bretaye Cole (James and nephew Clayton) of North Lake Tahoe, and brother, Haydn, maternal grandparents, Forrest and Marilyn Johnson, and paternal grandmother, Betty Gaw, all of Atacadero, mother-in-law, Mary Inlow, father-in-law, Dan Inlow, brother-in-law, Nick Inlow, and sister-in-law, Amy Inlow, all of Los Osos.
August loved family life, animals, honor, the wilderness, hunting, ranching, martial arts, living off the land; and he did all of these with all he had.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Templeton, 610 Main St.
