Rylanne Wood, 7, of Paso Robles had a hair-raising experience at the Paso Robles City Library on Tuesday. She wasn’t alone.

A room full of children joined Rylanne for the Fun With Physics program led by Paso Robles High School teacher Mark Fairbank.

Children learned how a Van De Graaff generator works — the giant silver-colored ball, mounted on a pedestal is a machine devised to “produce a high voltage by means of an endless belt collecting electrostatic charge from a source and transferring it to a large isolated metal dome, on which a large charge accumulates,” according to Google dictionary. That sounds intimidating, but the result is pure science fun. Bottom line, the kids touch it, and their hair stands up.

“He’s just so fabulous with the kids, they had so much fun,” said Heather Stephenson, children’s services librarian.
