PASO ROBLES — All it takes is a quick glance at the daily schedule for the California Mid-State Fair to get an idea of what the people really want to see.

The answer is action, specifically the kind that involves small children putting on helmets and riding sheep before inevitably tumbling to the dirt.

The event, of course, is Mutton Bustin’, which runs four times a day for the entirety of the 12-day spectacle at the Paso Robles Event Center.

No other attraction has the kind of pull that Mutton Bustin’ does, as it provides entertainment for fair-goers from all walks of life.

Whether you’re watching your own child clutching sheepskin, or simply stopping by for some cheap laughs at the expense of someone else’s offspring, Mutton Bustin’ is sure to bust your gut.

And, if the kids aren’t careful, they could be busting some bones to boot.

The 2014 CMSF has already had its share of mutton madness, with two full days of competition in the books.

As of press time, results from the Thursday sessions of Mutton Bustin’ were unavailable.

However, opening day on Wednesday was chock-full of young champions fighting to their last wool, and four have already come away with gold.

In the very first performance on the 2014 schedule, a Paso native took home the top spot, as 6-year-old Ajrian Aguilar lasted the longest out of 10 competitors.

Aguilar held strong for 3.12 seconds, edging out James Frias of Santa Clarita and Jasper Oliver of Paso Robles.

After receiving his medal, Aguilar had a clear and concise strategy for successful sheep surfing — “holding on…tight.”
