Benefit to be held for local cancer victim in Paso Robles

In February 2009, Sandi Cookston, a precious wife, mother and friend of many in the local community, was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer [IBC].

IBC is also known as the silent killer.

IBC, unlike most breast cancer, is not detected by mammogram or in the form of a lump found in routine self-exams. Sadly, by the time IBC is diagnosed symptoms have surfaced and the cancer has spread rapidly. The survival rate for IBC is only five percent because of its late detection.

It's a "rare cancer" for a "rare individual." Sandi has a way of making all of those around her feel loved and special. Sandi has been a fighter and has continued to follow through with all the roles she has come to know as a routine in her life. Through chemotherapy, a mastectomy of her right breast and radiation therapy, Sandi keeps going. She makes a point to attend her children's activities and community events. As a mother of three children ages 24, 14 and 9 and a wife of a highway patrolman, daughter, sister and friend, Sandi has and will always put others before herself, friends said.

As members of the community we are hoping to come together for a longtime resident of 13 years and raise money for the cause to help the family with the high costs of the treatments.

A benefit lunch and silent auction will be held on Sunday, Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Level 4 in downtown Paso Robles by friends and family of the Cookston's. Organizers are asking for everyone as a community to join together for the fight and awareness against IBC.

Donations can also be made at Heritage Oaks Bank to the Sandi Cookston cancer benefit account, or for more information contact Elise Townsen at 239-2283 or 832-262-5184.
