Skate rink returns to Atascadero
Posted: Thursday, Feb 18th, 2010

An iceless skate rink, originally scheduled to premiere late last year in Atascadero during Atascadero Main Street's annual Winter Wonderland celebration, will be open in the downtown Sunken Gardens on Saturday, Feb. 20 from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 21 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., according to Main Street Executive Director Steve Martin.

"When heavy rain made it impossible to bring the rink to town during Winter Wonderland we told folks we would bring it back this year," Martin said. "Weather permitting, that's just what we're going to do this month. Ever since the ice rink went away a couple of years ago people have asked to have it come back. The problem is that the ice rink was very expensive. To keep an area of that size iced down requires a huge diesel generator running continuously. That's not very cost-effective and not very environmentally-sensitive."

The rink will be located in the Sunken Gardens and will measure 40 feet by 60 feet. That will hold about 40 skaters per session. There will be two sessions per hour. The cost will be $6 and that will include skates or skaters may bring their own.
