Billy "Bill" Marlin Long, 86, of Paso Robles passed away peacefully at his home on Dec. 19, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer with his loving family at his side.
Bill was born in Allen, Okla. on Oct. 17, 1926. In 1943, he moved to Los Angeles and worked at Langendorf Bakery until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a sergeant in Japan during World War II. In 1948 he moved to Paso Robles, where he met his future wife, the former Mary Meeks. It was at that time he also began his lifelong career of working in the oil business. Bill began working on land rigs throughout California, drilling exploratory wells and retired in 1991 as an offshore operations manager from Global Marine Offshore Drilling. His career took him to countries all over the world such as, Africa, Australia, Greece, Iran, Norway, Scotland and Sicily, but Paso Robles was always his home.
Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and outdoor sports and activities.He was a avid supporter and follower of Bearcat sports, NASCAR, and he loved country music. He was a member of the Northside Church of Christ in Atascadero and was a life-member of the VFW Post 10965.
He was a loving husband, father, and adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a self-taught musician who could play almost any musical instrument. On any given day you could find him picking up his guitar and strumming a tune. Bill loved working with his hands and there was very little he couldn’t fix or repair. He was a quiet man and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed greatly by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary; daughters, Belinda Falaschi (Dave), Gwen Welch (Greig); grandchildren, Deanna Pryor (Kelly), Kim Roady (John), Andrea Falaschi, Kelly Mowreader (Eric), Jaime Schaetz (Daniel), Dan Long; great-grandchildren, Jorden Welch-Davis, Grace Roady, Taylor King, Vanessa Mowreader, Devin Mowreader and Hayden Roady; brother, Kenneth Long; sisters, Imogene Dickenson, June Sharp; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Elva Long; and his son James Marlin Long.
A graveside service is planned for Thursday Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Paso Robles District Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to the Northside Church of Christ, 3205 El Camino Real, Atascadero, CA 93422 in memory of Bill.
