“And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light” — (Luke 16:8 NLT).
The story goes that a large church belonging to a particular denomination had stopped growing. Frustrated that the church seemed stuck and unable to reach the same number of people than it had in days gone by, the pastor and the church leadership did what any business would do in such a situation — they hired a consultant. After careful observation of the church’s operations and connectivity to the community around them, the consultant returned with his conclusions. He told the church leadership that under the current conditions, the best thing they could do to attract people would be to put a fence around the church and charge admission for people to come and see how they used to do church back in the 1950’s.
