Coach Spells raises the bar

Back row, from left: THS student-athletes Robert Silva, Spencer Martinelli, Jared Wilson and Andy Flynn and Carson Rinkenberger (AHS).

PASO ROBLES — Gary Rinkenberger watches as his grandson, Carson, an incoming freshman at Atascadero High, goes through the drills with Speed Development Coach John Spells at the Paso Robles High School track. Carson, a track and field athlete and quarterback during his years with youth football, is hoping to play quarterback for the Greyhounds as well.

“Coach Spells only takes kids that have really good grades and goals to achieve,” Rinkenberger said. “Good grades come first and then athletics — he is really good about that. He teaches them character as well.”

Spells has trained hundreds of local athletes over the years. Time after time, student-athletes committing to attend and play sports at a variety of colleges mention his name as they thank those who have contributed to their success.

“We raise the bar high academically,” Spells said. “It’s about getting these kids into college. I keep them running through a system and I like one-on-one mentoring.”
