San Luis Obispo native and life-long county resident, Eugene (Gene) Barre Sr., 73, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013 peacefully at home, with a house full of family and oldest son Gene holding his hand after a long battle with cancer. He was born in February 1940 in San Luis Obisp to Neva (Fiscalini) and Albert Barre. Gene was raised on the family ranch atop the Irish Hills of SLO. He loved the ranch and the childhood it gave him.
In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Veda McDaniel. This past March, they celebrated 57 years of marriage. Gene worked mainly in the construction business most of his working life. He was in the Operating Engineers for a time. In his later years, he was self-employed, operating Gene’s Trucking.
Dad loved life, loved work, loved cookies, had hot rod cars, motorcycles, built beach buggies, hunted, fished, farmed, and loved to barbecue.
He was very proud of his sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his deep roots in SLO County and his connection to the Johe and Fiscalini families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandsons, Michael H. Barre and Nolan Eubank, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by his loving wife, Veda, sons, Gene Jr. (Diana) of Atascadero, Richard (Mary) of Morro Bay, and Tony (Carrie) of Shandon, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister, Barbara Lehnhoff (Bill) of Paso Robles, sisters-in-law, Barbara Navoni (Paul) of Atascadero, and Tina Meehan (Eugene) of Templeton, uncle, Albert (Totsy) Fiscalini (Sue) of San Luis Obispo, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Gene’s request, there will be no services. A family dinner will be held in his honor.
